The June 30 deadline is looming for all early childhood professionals to complete 10 hours of required professional development training. Having a completed Professional Development Certificate or completing 10 hours of training need to have been reached between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025.
Anyone who works at a SUTQ-rated program and previously achieved a Professional Development certificate between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024, does not need to obtain an additional 10 hours of professional development but they do still need six hours of training to meet licensing requirements.
“Don’t wait until the last minute to sign up for training,” strategic director Andrew Brzezinski advises providers still in need of hours. “Also, look for sessions that will benefit you and your program.”

What If You Miss the Deadline?
If the required professional development hours are not reached by the deadline of June 30, child care programs risk losing Step Up To Quality (SUTQ) ratings. Non SUTQ-rated programs risks becoming non-compliant.
Annual Training Requirements Changing on July 1, 2025
Beginning on July 1 professional development standards are changing for all early childhood professionals.
Annual training requirements changes will include:
- To meet licensing requirements, all professionals must complete six hours of professional development.
- All professionals working in SUTQ-rated programs must complete 10 hours in one year, which includes the required six hours mentioned above.
- 10 hours must include two of the required training topics. Each training topic must be an hour in length.
- Only administrators and family child care providers are required to obtain additional training hours for a Step Up to Quality Silver (two additional hours for a total of 12) or Gold (five additional hours for a total of 15) rating.
- The topics of the additional hours of training for administrators and family child care providers are the choice of the individual, and do not need to be one of the required topic areas.
