Kick Start School Conversations
School is back in session and your child is spending a lot of time away from home, so it’s only natural that you want to know how their day went. When asked the simple question, “How was your day?” most children respond, “good” or “fine.” As was a parent or caregiver, that short response doesn’t give you much insight and may make it more challenging to get more information out of them.
Try one of these questions to create meaningful conversations with your child and learn more about their day.
- What made you smile today?
- Who did you sit with at lunch?
- If you could change one thing about today, what would it be?
- What was the hardest rule to follow today?
- Tell me something you learned today that you did not know yesterday?
- Was there anything that made you feel nervous or frustrated today?
- Did you help someone today and or did someone help you?
- What are you looking forward to doing at school tomorrow?
- What was the funniest thing that happened today?
- What was your favorite part of today?
Keep in mind, not all children are ready to talk right after school. Find a good time that works for everyone, maybe it is at the dinner table, during homework time or when you’re tucking your child in for the night.
Open communication between you and your child is so important at all ages from preschoolers to college students. Good communication establishes trust between you and your child and that can make them feel comfortable talking to you about their life as they get older.
