    Balancing Screen Time for Children

    January 2, 2024

In today’s culture, screens play a big part in our lives. There has been an abundance of research completed over the last several years that shows limiting daily screen time can improve physical and mental health for everyone.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends two hours per day for teens and adults, one hour per day for children 2-12 years of age and no screen time for children under the age of two.

Here are a few suggestions to help start limiting your child’s screen time in the new year:

    1. Set Clear Limits: Establish specific rules regarding when and how much screen time is allowed each day. Make sure these rules are clear, consistent and age appropriate. Consider using parental controls or built-in device features to enforce time limits.
    2. Create Screen-Free Spaces: Designate specific areas in your home where screens are not allowed, such as the dinner table or bedrooms. This helps create boundaries and promotes family interaction.
    3. Be a Positive Role Model: Demonstrate healthy screen habits by managing your own screen time effectively. Children often learn by example, so showing responsible behavior with screens can positively influence them.
    4. Watch or Play Together: Enjoying screen time together not only allows you to monitor content but also provides opportunities for discussion about what your children are seeing or doing online.
    5. Encourage Outdoor Activities: Balance screen time with physical activities, outdoor play and off-line hobbies. This helps develop well-rounded lifestyles and prevents excessive sedentary behavior.
    6. Establish Tech-Free Bedtime: Encourage a screen-free period before bedtime to promote better sleep. The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with sleep patterns.

Remember, the key to limiting screen time is to find a balance that works for your family and evolves as your child grows. Flexibility is important and periodic reassessment of screen time rules can help accommodate changing needs and circumstances.
