August and back to school comes with mixed feelings for school-age children and their families. The new school year is exciting but it can also cause some anxiety among both caregivers and children. Here are some ways that families can help smooth the transition and ease the anxiety, especially for children who are attending school for the first time.
Contact Your Local School District NOW
All districts have different calendars and processes for registration. If you have a child who will be ready for kindergarten in the 2026-2027 school year, keep in mind that registration usually opens in the winter/spring.
Start a Bedtime Routine
A nighttime routine can help your child wind down and prepare for a restful night’s sleep. Taking a warm bath, cuddling up with a good book and chatting about the day or about what to expect for the next day are simple ways to help your child relax.
Attend Open House Nights
Many schools hold an event for children and their families to visit their classrooms and teachers. Attending these events will help ease anxiety and give children confidence to start the new year. Also, meeting the new teacher gives you both the opportunity to ask questions.
Go Shopping for New Supplies
Help your child get excited by picking out new pencils, a bookbag and lunch boxes. Plus, Ohio holds a Sales Tax Holiday from Aug. 1-14. Items for less than $500 will be tax-free.
Establish a Morning Routine
Mornings are a high-stress time, especially if you are trying to get everyone out the door on time. Talk with your children about what steps they need to take to accomplish the morning routine. Practice as the first day of school approaches. With young school-agers, consider a picture routine.
Talk About School
When you are driving or eating dinner, discuss what they are excited for and maybe anxious about. Show your children you are interested in their school and their feelings and help them see school in a positive light.
Having less stress around the back-to-school transition will allow you to have more moments of joy as you and your child go into the new school year. Have a great school year!
