          Make Back-To-School Transitions Easier

          July 31, 2023

group of children ready for schoolBack to school is an exciting and anxious time for both kids and parents. Big changes are hard for anyone, but they can be especially difficult for the little ones. A little preparation before the first day back to school can help put you and your child at ease.

Here are six tips to help you get ready for another year of learning.

          • Gradually Change Wake up Times: In the two weeks leading up to school, begin changing wake-up and bedtimes by 15-minute increments. This will familiarize children with getting up each morning and going to bed each night at a set time for the school year. This kickstarts a strong routine.
          • Make a Habit of Preparing Backpacks the Night Before: A week before school starts, help your child find a place where they can set their bag, so they always know where it is when they are walking out the door. This habit can help children become familiar with this vocabulary and gives them independence over their routine.
          • Change Mealtimes: Check out the school’s snack and lunch schedule so that your child can eat at similar times. If your child wants a snack throughout the day, try to transition to their snack time at school. Start a week before school starts.
          • Go Over Ground Rules: Decide when and where homework will be done. Discuss how much TV or screen time before bed and when household chores are completed. Establishing guidelines and going over them together will make sure you are on the same page once school is in session.
          • Chat up School: Start talking about what to expect in the upcoming school year. Great conversation starters could include who their teacher will be, how to make new friends, and fun field trips. The more excited you are about school, the more excited your child will be.
          • Have some fun: Summer is not quite over yet, enjoy the last week with your child. Jump in the pool, walk trails and explore parks.

Every summer must come to an end and every year you and your child will be making the transition into a new beginning. By planning ahead mentally and physically, you and your child will be off to a great start!
