          Embracing People of All Abilities

          February 28, 2025

As a parent you can help your child understand and embrace those with disabilities. Your child has likely been in a classroom, grocery store, park or library with a person who has special needs. Talking openly and honestly about these experiences is critical in helping children understand the uniqueness of others and encourage positive interactions.

Children are naturally curious and highly observant. Embrace their curiosity by taking these simple steps.

          Encourage Questions

Questions are an opportunity to have a discussion. Talk openly and honestly. Allow children to ask questions about others’ abilities and let them know it is OK to want to learn about others in a respectful and informative way.

          Lead by Example

Treat individuals with special needs with respect and kindness. Offer help to those in need. This includes helping people with special needs or someone who cares for them. When children see you offering kindness and respect, they learn how to treat others from your example.

          Create Opportunities

Organize playdates or volunteer you and your child’s time at events that involve other children and adults with different needs.

          Emphasize Similarities and Shared Interests

Focus on the things all children want – friends, love, laughter and to be included. The more your child can relate to others the more understanding, compassion and interest they can develop for others.

Focus on Abilities Rather Than Disabilities

Point out to your children others’ strengths and abilities and how hard they must work every day despite any challenges. This will help build empathy and respect.

          Learn About Disabilities Together

You might not always have the answers to all your child’s questions. As they start growing older, their questions can become more complicated. Do not feel pressured to answer your child’s questions. Be honest with them and tell them you do not have all the answers but would be happy to learn along with them.

Understanding and respecting those who live with special needs and different abilities can be challenging for both children and adults. Teaching your child to be curious, respectful and kind will help them create opportunities for themselves and others.
