          Building Strong Social/Emotional Skills

          January 31, 2025

Raising children involves more than ensuring their physical well-being, it’s also about supporting their emotional and social development. It is never too early to start teaching children about the building blocks of healthy relationships that include empathy, respect and communication.

Here are a few ways you can teach and model how to create and maintain meaningful relationships.

          Teach Empathy and Compassion

Encourage children to think about how others might feel in different situations. Teaching children to understand and share another person’s feelings helps them develop a deeper bond with others. Books and stories are excellent tools to help children explore various perspectives and feelings.

          Encourage Open Communication

Teach children to express their feelings and thoughts directly and politely. Creating an environment for children to feel safe to share their emotions without fear of judgement will foster trust and help validate their feelings so they know that their voice matters.

          Handle Conflicts Constructively

Encourage children to use words to express feelings rather than responding physically. Teach and demonstrate problem-solving skills and how to find compromise in a conflict.

          Foster Self-esteem and Independence

Encourage children to have their own interests and hobbies. You can then encourage their efforts and praise their accomplishments, which will boost their self-esteem. Children with a positive sense of self are more likely to resist negative peer pressure.

Teach About the Signs of Unhealthy Relationships

It is crucial to help children recognize signs of unhealthy relationships. Unacceptable behavior such as bullying, use of non-age-appropriate language, manipulation and disrespect are harmful and affect others. Encourage children to speak up if they are confronted with such situations and make sure they have the support they need.

As your children age, their relationships with their peers, family and educators will change. Patience, consistency and active engagement are important during this time. By modeling positive behaviors and encouraging empathy and open communication, parents and caregivers can help children develop the skills to build and maintain healthy relationships.
