How to Create a Rainbow Plate

          August 21, 2026

The best part of a post-stormy sky is the rainbow that can appear in the distance. From viral videos to children’s cereal brands, rainbows always capture our attention. Now, you can turn this colorful favorite to life with a hands-on rainbow plate craft!

This is a great activity for children to work on fine motor skills as they glue cotton balls and streamers onto the plate. It’s also a great opportunity for older children to practice cutting skills (always with adult supervision). Even better, you can focus on color recognition when gluing the streamers on the plate.

Scroll for instructions and a video on how to make a rainbow plate!

          Materials

          • Paper Plate
          • Cotton Balls
          • Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Purple Streamers
          • Glue
          • Scissors

          Instructions

          1. Cut the paper plate in half.
          2. Cover the cut paper plate in glue and stick the cotton balls all over the plate.
          3. Cut each color streamer to about the same length.
          4. Glue the streamers onto the plate. The colors can be in a random order or you can focus on the order that they appear in a rainbow (remember ROY G. BIV).
          5. Hang your rainbow on a window or wall.
