What Is Social Emotional Development Anyway?

          October 1, 2019

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken adults.” -Frederick Douglass

Social emotional development is a child’s ability to understand the feelings of others, control their own feelings and behaviors and get along with peers. It provides them with a sense of who they are in the world and teaches them how to establish quality relationships with others. Read More about What Is Social Emotional Development Anyway? »

          Helping Children Make Friends

          August 6, 2019

Six children lie on grass in a circle with their heads together, smiling and laughing joyfully, as seen from above. The kids wear colorful clothes and appear happy and playful. For children, making friends is a vital part of growing up and an essential part of their social and emotional development. Friendships enable children to learn more about themselves and develop their own identity.

Just like adults, some children seem to make friends easily and get energy from being around lots of other people. Others can find this tiring and overwhelming while still others may be slower to warm up and need time to watch what happens before joining in with a group. Start Your Back-to-School Plan!

          July 2, 2019

A man smiles as he helps a young child standing on a chair clean a kitchen counter. The child, wearing a red and white striped shirt, wipes the surface with a blue cloth while the man pours water from a yellow cup.It is that time of year again: back-to-school preparation, excitement and first day jitters! The busy-ness of summer is soon to be replaced by the busy-ness of school. As summer begins to wind down we begin to see large, colorful back-to-school displays. Often times these store displays help parents have a mind shift on what you need to do to prepare children for back-to-school routines and schedules. Preparing children for back to school includes helping our children prepare both mentally and physically for the school year ahead. Read More about Start Your Back-to-School Plan! »

          Building Your Parenting Village

          June 5, 2019

Two women sit on a rug in a bright living room, smiling and talking while watching three young children playing with colorful toys on the floor.Parenting is wonderful and rewarding, but it’s also hard. To navigate through some of the difficult times, you need the support of other parents who are struggling with some of the same issues. So sometimes you may need a sounding board to brainstorm ideas to address your children’s challenging behavior. Or sometimes you may need someone to watch your kids because you have an appointment or want a fun night out with your partner. Or sometimes you just might need to share about your day with a person whose vocabulary extends beyond the phrase, “Cookies for dinner, please!” or make sure your child has a friend around their age to play with when you go to the park.

Regardless of the scenario, parents need a village of support! Read More about Building Your Parenting Village »

Exploring the World Through Play Experiences

          March 5, 2019

A young child wearing a white dress smiles while holding a black spray bottle, standing among green potted plants and ferns indoors.Did you know that the concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) are all around us? You don’t need to have an in-depth knowledge of these subjects to introduce them to children. Families can naturally embed these concepts in everyday life. A foundation for STEAM is laid by helping children increase their awareness of the world and by encouraging them to think creatively.

There’s No Perfect Temperature for Outdoor Play!

          January 2, 2019

A smiling baby wearing a pink hat, pink scarf, blue winter coat, and pink mittens stands in falling snow, holding a yellow toy shovel outdoors.Don’t let snow and cold keep your children from outdoor play this winter. When dressed appropriately, the benefits children receive from playing outdoors far outweigh the fears of frost bite! Active outdoor play combats childhood obesity, promotes gross motor development and helps reduce stress—for parents and for children! It is common to hear adults say that “my child will not like being in the cold weather,” or “the cold is too dangerous to play in,” or “there’s nothing to play with.” It is up to adults to focus on the importance of children’s play, regardless of the season. After all, play should not be restricted to warm weather. Let’s approach the winter season with a playful attitude.
