4C for Children is saddened to share the passing of Dr. Dorothy June Sciarra, a leader in the early childhood field and a strong supporter of 4C.

June was a friend and resource for 4C staff over the decades. She served on training committees and was integral in helping develop and implement 4C’s Developing Early Childhood Leaders seminar. June was very generous with sharing her time to help 4C coaches and trainers stay current on child development trends, policy and politics.

To honor her support of 4C, the agency named its resource library for child care providers in her honor in 2007 and in 2012, the June Sciarra Early Childhood Leadership Award was created and bestowed on her. This award is given annually to a child care administrator who demonstrates the leadership qualities that June modeled over her long career: Vision/Inspiration, Relationship Building, Commitment to Excellence, Advocacy for Children, Sound Early Childhood Education Philosophy.

From the University of Cincinnati Nursery School, where June began her career in early childhood education.

June’s career started long before co-writing two text books, Leaders and Supervisors in Child Care Programs and Developing and Administering a Child Care and Education Program. Early on in her career, she served as director of the University of Cincinnati Nursery School, serving children and families from a wide range of backgrounds. Her work as director set the standard throughout the area for what Developmentally Appropriate Practice should look like. Former students—many of whom are leading local child care programs today—still talk about her classes. They looked to her as their mentor and friend and would often call on her to guide them as their careers developed.

June led the early childhood associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs at the University of Cincinnati and served on the board of the university’s early learning center. Among the honors she achieved was being named the first recipient of the Ohio Association for the Education of Young Children Early Childhood Teacher Educator Award.

We will miss you, June, but your inspiration will always be infused in our journey.
